Better Tomorrow Than Today, It's a Process.

You know those experiences that happen in the most inconvenient times and at the most inconvenient ways? Well tonight I had one. Today was a long one, longer than usual. I was constantly running around, and there wasn’t a moment that I wasn’t thinking about what I was going to do next, or what I have to get ready to do. When I got home I continued to run around like a chicken with its head cut off, until a sweet friend came over and asked if I could help her RIGHT that second. In my head I thought.. Sorry sweet cheeks, find someone else, I need me to myself for a while to finish what I need to get done… but then I thought how can I say no? SHE NEEDS ME!!!! So I helped her. In no way am I patting myself on the back, but as I arrived home from helping her and sat down (finally), I looked back at my day and thought, I helped someone. I didn’t save the world, but I helped one soul feel special and important right then, whether it was earth shattering to her or not. So take a minute, and realize who is always there for you in those inconvenient times. If you don’t know, I want you to TEST PEOPLE. See what people will do to make sure you know they care! And then after you figure out what it looks like to care, be that person everyone else can always count on! WE need more people who are reliable.  You know that famous sentence we ALL say too much when someone is having a hard time?....  “I’m here for you if you need anything”. SOOOO over used. And abused! Honestly people. If you say it, mean it. Actually I take it back, don’t say that line, it’s tacky. JUST BE THERE FOR THEM. 98% of the population won’t come up to you and say I really need you to do this this and this for me. NO. Be proactive and just do things for people when they’re having a trial, or even just because you want to show someone you care for them.  Random acts of (simple) kindness will get you further than one big act, people remember the little things.

There’s a famous quote from Will Smith, “If you’re not making someone else’s life better, you’re wasting your time.”

I was listening to a wonderful podcast for my ethics and values class called, "Why, a Mormon Answer". http://radiowest.kuer.org/post/why-mormon-answer It was a religious podcast interviewing a couple who wrote the book, “A God Who Weeps”, never read it, but I recommend it just from listening to the interview. In it they talked about how we are more worried about ourselves than the person sitting next to us. “When tragedy happens, it’s our duty to act and help others around us. Be more involved with people’s lives. Be truly interested in their lives. Help with their burdens.” Think of a world where everyone lifts each other up just by being interested in them, sharing their hardships, and making their life a little better.

One day in dance practice, my dearest friend was having a rough day. She said, “God is trying to teach me patience, but God I don’t want to learn patience today, can’t that wait till tomorrow”?

I realized in that moment that God doesn’t give us the ideal situation to be perfectly patient, or perfectly humble, or perfectly selfless. God gives us the most inconvenient times to truly test our character. He wants to see how we will perform in the worst of times. Because we can all put a smile on and do our best in the ideal situation, God knows that. He wants us to have experiences to grow, learn and to become better than we are the previous day.

SO this next week, I challenge you each day: Do at least one thing (simple) for someone else. TEST PEOPLE. Be that reliable person to everyone, but don’t say “I’m here if you need me”. Lift others up. Take burdens off of shoulders. Be involved with people.  God wants us to learn how to be our best self.
